Twenty Five years ago, Cole Richardson was not only a University of South Carolina student, but like many USC students after him, also a loyal team member at Groucho’s Original Deli. As we love a good story, we caught up with Cole who is now living with this wife and 4 children in North Carolina to ask him just how he ended up having a sandwich named after him.
As Cole tells it – “After about a year of working at Groucho’s Original Deli, I had eaten everything on menu (a lot) and wanted something a little different. I would make myself a variation of the All Turkey STP Dipper with the bread cut a little different and American cheese. Like any college student, I would want to see my friends and would often call them all to come see me at work. Every day, I would work recommend this variation to my friends and would make it a point to remind Mr. Miller of how many we had sold. On my last shift before graduation, Mr. Miller tossed me a menu and said “Happy Graduation”. Imagine my surprise to open it and see the “Cole Special Dipper”. Mr. Miller was an amazing man and I am honored that he thought enough of my time in his family owned restaurant to include me on the menu.”
Today, Cole still visits the Groucho’s Deli in Statesville, NC and other locations as he travels to share his love of Groucho’s and the sandwich Mr. Miller named for him with his family.
